What is a Ultracapacitor?

A Ultracapacitor is a high-capacity capacitor with capacitance values much higher than other capacitors (but lower voltage limits) that bridge the gap between electrolytic capacitors and rechargeable batteries. They typically store 10 to 100 times more energy per unit volume or mass than electrolytic capacitors, can accept and deliver charge considerably faster than batteries, and withstand many more charge and discharge cycles than rechargeable batteries.

    How it’s made?

    Ultracapacitor are constructed with two metal foils (which serve as current collectors), each covered with an electrode material such as activated carbon, which serve as the power connection between the electrode material and the external terminals of the capacitor. Specifically, to the electrode material is a very large surface area. The electrodes are kept apart by an ion-permeable membrane (separator) used as an insulator to protect the electrodes against short circuits. This construction is subsequently rolled into a cylindrical or rectangular shape and can be stacked in conductive container. The cell is then infused with a liquid or viscous electrolyte of organic or aqueous type. The electrolyte, an ionic conductor, enters the pores of the electrodes and serves as the conductive connection between the electrodes across the separator.

    Ultracapacitors over the years have grown into there own lingo over the years. Ultracapacitor were originally called EDLC which stands for Electric Double Layer Capacitor. It has grown into being called a Ultracapacitor, Ultracapacitor as well as EDLC. These are all the same type of capacitor but with a different names. We will be using these names through out the website. The VPC series, an environmentally friendly Hybrid Lithium Capacitor family, has been developed to reduce costs against more expensive Pulse Battery technologies whilst offering significantly lower ESR with longer life, wider temperature ranges and higher discharge currents from similar sizes and comparable Battery based technology.
